Savonlinna Opera Festival July 9 – August 7, 2004,,Five operas, magnificent concert programme and Latvian National Opera's visit,,Opera season 2004 includes two new premières. The Tales of Hoffmann composed by Jacques Offenbach and directed by Professor Kurt Horres will be seen on the main stage, in the Olavinlinna castle. The series of children's operas will be opened with Jaakko Kuusisto's Canine Kalevala In the Savonlinna Hall. This world première is directed by Minna Vainikainen.,,In the series of successful operas, Cavalleria rusticana/I pagliacci will arrive in the castle as Kari Heiskanen's beloved production. Savonlinna Opera Festival's own repertoire will be supplemented with this year's most popular operas, Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman and Giacomo Puccini's Turandot.,,Baltic countries' entry into the European Union is celebrated by inviting Latvian National Opera and Estonia Theatre to Savonlinna. Estonia Theatre will play Anton Dvořák's Requiem for the honor of Savonlinna-Sääminki Gongregation's 500th Anniversary. Latvian National Opera will perform Giuseppe Verdi's Masked Ball and Anton Rubinstein's great work, Demon.,,Mikko-Ville Luolajan-Mikkola, Artist of the Year 2004, and the chamber ensemble of the Savonlinna Opera Festival Orchestra represent instrumentalists in the festival's concert series. Two winners of the BBC Singer of the World competition, Karita Mattila and Tommi Hakala, will be seen as lied singers. Laura Pyrrö, the winner of the Timo Mustakallio singing competition 2002, will give a recital in the Savonlinna Hall. The 2004 Timo Mustakallio competition is held in the Olavinlinna Castle on Sunday, July 18.
